The Revival of Scrubs
Nostalgia has always been a feeling that connects people. Call it romanticizing the past, sure, but it’s more than that. When we remember how things once were, we remember the emotions we’ve attached to those memories. The power of nostalgia has led to a massive surge in the rebooting of many television shows and movies. Networks and studios are bringing in a new cast of characters and bringing back a few old ones to feed viewers nostalgia through a modern lens.
However, these reboots or TV show spin-offs never feel complete. The studios are completely missing the point of what fans really want. When people crave that nostalgia, they don’t want a modern take. They want the same thing they had before, because that is what every fond memory is built on. People want back that original feeling of comfort.
Which is why the revival of Scrubs has been the best taste of the past. Reviving a fan-favorite sitcom with the original cast and keeping the same humor and tone as before helps fans feel like the show has never left. There is no more romanticizing the past, because the content being produced now holds the same value as before.
Scrubs, a hospital-based sitcom, just launched its revival at the end of last month and is already four episodes into the nine-episode season. All I can say is that if you are a Scrubs fan, you will not be disappointed. I was hooked the moment I realized JD’s daydreaming hadn’t gone anywhere and that appletinis were still on the menu. I don’t think any other sitcom could pull off what Scrubs has accomplished. This revival is a time-capsule masterpiece that lets viewers know the love JD and Turk have for each other will never fade. This might be the show that helps convince networks that revivals are worth the time and effort, and reboots and spin-offs need to be left behind.
If you haven’t already, watch Scrubs on Wednesday nights at 8/7c on ABC or stream on Hulu.
